Large wheels vs small wheels: comfort differences
When overall diameter stays similar, a larger wheel usually requires less tire sidewall. That is the trade-off to examine before changing wheel size.
Keep the outside diameter in view
A plus-size wheel arrangement replaces some sidewall with wheel diameter. Compare full tire sizes rather than wheel inches alone. The vehicle’s brake clearance and approved wheel specifications can limit how small a wheel can be.
Compare two similar-diameter assemblies
205/55 R16 is 631.9 mm overall with 112.75 mm of sidewall. 225/45 R17 is 634.3 mm overall with 101.25 mm of sidewall. The latter has 11.5 mm less sidewall even though the overall diameter differs by only 2.4 mm.
Account for more than impact cushioning
Wheel mass, tire construction, inflation requirements and suspension tune can alter the ride. Larger wheels can change steering response and tire replacement cost. Smaller wheels must still clear the brakes and meet load requirements. Neither direction is automatically right for every car.
