Does a taller tire improve ride comfort?
A taller overall tire and a taller sidewall are not the same thing. For impact cushioning, the sidewall is the more relevant geometric starting point.
Separate wheel diameter from sidewall
A larger wheel can make the whole assembly taller without adding any sidewall. Conversely, a smaller wheel paired with a taller sidewall can keep overall diameter nearly unchanged. Compare sidewall heights in millimetres rather than assuming the larger outside diameter will ride better.
Use a real dimensional example
195/65 R15 has a 126.75 mm sidewall and 634.5 mm diameter. 205/55 R16 has a 112.75 mm sidewall and 631.9 mm diameter. The smaller wheel provides 14 mm more sidewall with only a 2.6 mm difference in overall diameter. That is a useful comfort-related distinction, subject to both assemblies being approved for the vehicle.
Treat comfort as a system
More sidewall may provide more compliance over sharp impacts, but reinforced construction, pressure, wheel mass and suspension can dominate the result. Do not lower pressure below the vehicle’s specified requirements to pursue comfort. Compare tire models and manufacturer guidance, not just dimensions.
