How tire size affects speedometer accuracy

A bigger rolling circumference carries the car farther per wheel revolution. Without recalibration, that changes the relationship between indicated speed and road speed.

Use the diameter ratio

For nominal geometry, circumference equals π × diameter. When comparing two circumferences, π cancels, leaving new diameter ÷ old diameter. Multiply indicated speed by that ratio to isolate the tire-size effect. This assumes the original setup was calibrated correctly.

Calculate the change at a familiar speed

175/65 R15 is 608.5 mm in diameter. 195/65 R15 is 634.5 mm. The ratio is about 1.04273. At an indicated 60 mph, theoretical actual speed is 62.56 mph; at 100 km/h indicated it is 104.27 km/h. The same multiplier applies in either speed unit.

Know what the estimate leaves out

Loaded rolling circumference differs from free-standing geometry. Pressure, wear and vehicle calibration introduce additional differences. An odometer based on wheel revolutions may also be affected. Use vehicle-approved sizes and professional recalibration guidance; do not rely on this estimate as an instrument calibration certificate.
