Can you install wider tires on the same wheel?
The rim diameter must match, but that is only the first check. Wheel width and the exact tire model’s approved rim range decide whether the combination is appropriate.
Find the wheel’s actual specification
A marking such as 7J × 16 ET45 includes a nominal width of 7 inches, a 16-inch diameter and a 45 mm offset. The width is measured at the bead seats, not across the outer lips. Record the full specification rather than estimating it from a photograph.
Look up the exact tire model
Two tires with the same printed size can have different measured section widths. Consult the manufacturer’s specification sheet for approved rim widths, measuring rim, load capacity and overall diameter. Do not infer an approved range from a calculator’s geometric output.
Check the vehicle as well as the wheel
Even if a wider tire is approved for the wheel, it may contact a strut, liner or fender during use. Load rating, speed rating, axle pairing and vehicle manufacturer requirements remain essential. Use the alternatives finder to shortlist dimensions, then verify an actual commercially available tire.
